Working Here

What it is actually like to work at Xandori Legal.

Probate and private client work is not a practice area that suits everyone. The matters are legally complex, often emotionally delicate, and require a practitioner who can hold a client's confidence through what may be one of the most difficult periods of their lives. We are selective about who joins us because the work demands it.

We are not a large department within a full-service firm. Every solicitor and paralegal here works on private client and estate matters exclusively — there is no rotation into unrelated practice areas, no secondment to a corporate group, no expectation that you will eventually move to a different department. If you are here, probate and succession is what you do.

Junior solicitors take client contact early. You will be drafting grant applications under supervision within your first weeks, attending client meetings as the lead alongside a partner within your first year, and running your own files — with oversight — within eighteen months. There is no long queue.

We work from our offices five days a week. We do not have a hybrid-first policy, though we accommodate reasonable flexibility for personal circumstances. The expectation is that people are present and engaged.

Real Files from the Start

Junior solicitors are placed on live matters from day one. Supervision is close, but the work is real — you are not producing internal research memos for eighteen months before being introduced to a client.

International Dimension

A significant proportion of our matters involve assets or beneficiaries in multiple jurisdictions. You will develop working knowledge of cross-border succession questions — such as domicile and coordination across jurisdictions — that many practitioners rarely encounter.

Substantive Supervision

Partners review all work-product before it goes to a client. This is not a firm where you are left to produce documents unsupervised and hope for the best. Feedback is given promptly and specifically — you will understand why a document was changed, not just that it was.

One Practice Area

You will not be pulled onto commercial transactions or litigation outside the probate and private client sphere. Every matter here relates to wills, estates, trusts, or succession. That focus is deliberate.

STEP Qualification Support

We support solicitors pursuing the STEP Diploma and TEP qualification. Study leave, examination fees, and mentoring from senior practitioners who hold the TEP designation are available to eligible fee-earners.

Client Communication

Clear, careful communication is central to every client-facing role at the firm.

Our Standards

What we look for.

Probate is a practice area where technical precision and human judgment are equally important. We look for both in the people who join us — not one at the expense of the other.

Academic credentials matter, but they are not the only consideration. We have taken on paralegals who became outstanding solicitors, and we have seen technically strong candidates who were unsuited to private client work because they were not genuinely interested in the people behind the files.

Genuine interest in the practice area

We can tell the difference between a candidate who finds probate and estates genuinely interesting and one who has applied because a position happened to be available. Private client work rewards practitioners who are curious about the people and families involved — not just the legal questions.

Precision in written work

Grant applications, estate accounts, trust deeds, and legal correspondence must be accurate. A single error in a grant application can delay an estate by months. We expect candidates to care about the quality of their written work and to be honest about what they have and have not drafted themselves.

Composure with clients in difficult situations

Families dealing with a bereavement are not always at their best. Beneficiaries with competing interests can be adversarial. Executors under pressure can be demanding. We look for people who remain clear-headed and professional in these situations without becoming cold or dismissive.

Ability to manage competing priorities

Probate files do not all move at the same pace. Some require urgent action — a caveat, a freezing application, a time-sensitive grant. Others wait for foreign courts or government departments. Managing a mixed caseload, knowing which matters need attention now and which can wait, is a skill we look for from the outset.

Training

Training and development.

We do not currently offer a formal training contract for law graduates. Please confirm the admission and practising requirements for the role with the firm.

We do offer a structured paralegal development programme for candidates who are working towards a law degree or legal qualification and wish to build a career in private client work. Paralegals who demonstrate the aptitude and commitment to progress to a solicitor role are supported in doing so, including through study leave and examination support.

All new solicitors go through an induction period of four to six weeks, during which they shadow senior practitioners, review closed files across different matter types, and attend client meetings as observers before taking on their own client contact. The pace at which individual responsibility is given depends on the person — some solicitors are ready earlier, some benefit from a longer induction.

STEP Diploma Support

Study leave, examination fees, and mentoring for eligible fee-earners pursuing the STEP Diploma in Trusts and Estates (International) or the full TEP designation.

International Exposure

Cross-border matters bring regular contact with foreign counsel in other jurisdictions. Solicitors develop an understanding of how other jurisdictions approach succession that no CPD course can replicate.

CPD Programme

All fee-earners attend regular internal seminars on succession law developments, case law updates, and practice management. External CPD attendance — professional body events, STEP conferences — is supported and funded.

Mentoring Structure

Each solicitor is assigned a senior mentor outside their immediate supervisory chain — someone to discuss career questions, practice development, and the longer-term shape of their career at the firm, separate from day-to-day file supervision.

Applications

Apply now or register your interest.

To apply for a specific role, use the application form and select the position you are interested in. If no current opening matches your profile but you would like to be considered for future vacancies, select "Speculative application" — we review all applications and keep suitable candidates on file for up to twelve months.

Please include a covering letter explaining why you are interested in probate and private client work specifically, and what you are looking for in your next position. A generic cover letter is unlikely to be persuasive. We read every application personally — it is worth taking the time to write a considered one.
